I just finished my Ph.D. at the University of Maryland, studying symbolic dynamics with Mike Boyle. In particular, I am interested in Z^d symbolic dynamics and tiling systems. I've actually been interested in this since my second year of college, when I did a presentation on Penrose Tilings (among the coolest tiling systems you'll ever see). I'm currently teaching Math220 - first semester elementary calculus.

I grew up in the suburbs north of Philadelphia, with my parents and older brother. I attended George School, a Quaker high school outside of Philadelphia. Definitely a formative experience for me. After graduating from high school, I made the chilling move to Northfield, Minnesota to attend Carleton College, a small liberal arts school south of the twin cities, and another fantastic experience. After graduating with a B.A. in math, I was ready to come back to the east coast, and to a warmer climate. I started graduate school at UMCP in August 2000. Now, nearly six years later, I've finished my Ph.D., and am getting ready to leave the area. Next month I'll be packing up and moving to an even warmer climate: Alabama. I start as an Assistant Professor at the University of Montevallo, a small, public liberal arts university just outside of Birmingham, in the fall.
