Transition to a Standards 2000 Classroom Through
the Problem Solving and Communication Standards

In order to encourage use of the NCTM publication Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, the document should include a "Letter to Teachers" before the introduction.  It should recommend that teachers begin to implement the standards by conferring with colleagues and by focusing on two standards to start: the problem solving and communication standards.  A sample of my proposed "Letter to Teachers" is included in this paper as well as justification for the two standards I have chosen to discuss.
