Math 462 - Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers
Spring Term 2005
- Lectures
-
MWF 11:00am-11:50am (MTH 0303)
- Instructor
- Georg Dolzmann (
dolzmann@math.umd.edu)
- Office: 4101 (405-5066); (I will be moving to 3309 (405-55144) during the term)
- Office hours: M 10-11, W 3-5, or by appointment
- Text
- The following text books are recommended:
- Introduction to Partial Differential Equations with MATLAB by J. Cooper,
Birkhäuser, 1998
- Partial Differential Equations : an Introduction by W. Strauss, Wiley, 1992
The syllabus of
Math 462
consists of the core material in Chapters 2-5 and 8-9 in Cooper's book
and of Chapters 1-7, 10-12 in Strauss' book.
If you want to read about ODE, you can use the text book for Math246, Differential
Equations for Scientists and Engineers, which is Elementary Differential Equations
by Boyce and DiPrima.
- Prerequisites
- Calculus I, II, III, one semester of ordinary differential equations
(Math 241, Math 246)
- Homework
- Homework problems will be assigned on Fridays and will be due
the following week Fridays. Homework will be collected and graded. Absolutely no late
homework will be accepted. There will be 10 assignments, the two lowest scoring will
be dropped.
Here are the homework
problems .
- Tests
- During the course there will be one 50-min test (midterm, written in class).
No make-up tests will be given, unless a written excuse according to the
University Policies
is presented in advance.
- Grading
- Homework: 100 points
- 50-min test, 100 points
- Final exam: 100 points
- Total: 300 points
- Test dates (tentatively)
- Midterm: Friday, April 8
- Final exam: Wednesday, May 18, 8:00 - 10:00am
- Religious observances
- If your religion dictates that you cannot take an exam or hand in assigned work
on a particular date, then contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss
alternatives. You are responsible for making these arrangements at the
beginning of the semester.
- Disabilities
- If you have some disability related to testing under the usual timed, in-class conditions,
you may contact the office of Disabled Students Services (DSS) in Shoemaker. If they assess you
as meriting private conditions and/or extra time, then you may
arrange to take your tests at DSS, with extra time as they indicate. You must arrange this well
in advance of a test (in particular: no retakes). Click
Disability Support Services for further information.
