TOPICS AND PROBLEM TYPES COVERED FOR FALL 2008 ============================================== 10/20/08 Topic coverage in the book and handouts: Chapters 1, 2. From Chapter 3: sections 3.E (but did not cover "Proc Format"), plus 3.G, 3.I, 3.L, 3.M. From Chapter 4: sections 4.E, 4.I (Proc Means only), 4.J. From Chapter 5: sections A--F and J. From Chapter 6: sections A, B, F. (NOTE: in material covered on past tests, relative risk and odds ratios have not been covered yet this year.) Miscellaneous SAS input-output operations : INPUT, INFILE, LIBNAME, inputting and concatenating SAS datasets. PROC SORT, MEANS, writing output files. Plotting & bar-charts. Data step syntax. Handouts: Partial Correlation (PartialCorr.pdf) Regression (RegrSheet2.pdf) Scripts : various, but especially Scripts/Corr.Log Scripts/FreqExmp.Log Logs: all in the NewLogs directory, because these were discussed in some detail in class. ================================================ Topics for Test Problems, Fall 08: (i) "How To" questions using SAS data-steps and PROC's. (ii) Interpretation of SAS output quantities. Hypothesis test formulations. Conclusions about data from plots, p-values, etc. Motivation for SAS analyses in response to questions asked about the data. Use of descriptive statistics (including freq tables and side-by-side box-plots and one- and two-sample t-statistics). (iii) Definitions of statistics (one-way chisq for fit, two-way chisq for row-column independence, McNemar & Kappa for "agreement", correlation, partial correlation, t statistic for significance of slope or intercept) (iv) Linear-algebra interpretation of projections in relation to predictors, residuals, correlations, partial correlations. ================================================ 1 Two-sided Notebook sheet of memory aids will be allowed in the in-class test on Monday, Oct. 24, 2008. ================================================ The test will probably consist of 3 problems. You should bring a calculator, but numerical simplifications will not be required for your final answers.
