She received her PhD in Statistics from University of California at Berkeley. She holds a faculty appointment at NIST. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. She is on the editorial board of Statistics and Probability Letters. She has served on the editorial boards of the Annals of Statistics, the Journal of Statistical Inference and Planning. She was a former president of the International Chinese Statistical Association, a council member of the IMS and the Bernoulli Society. She was a Statistics Program Director at the National Science Foundation.
