Syllabus: We will cover parts of chapterds 1-6 & 8. If time permits, we may discuss topics from some of the other chapters.
Course Objectives: The object of this course is to introduce the student to Partial Differential Equations from the modern point of view. This point of view has a substantial computational component. We will stress the connections between the equations we study and the physical systems they model.
Exams and Assignments There will be two midterm exams and a Final Exam on Friday, December 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The first midterm exam will be on Thursday October 8. It will cover chapters 1-3 in Strauss.
The second midterm exam will be on Tuesday November 17. It will cover parts of chapters 4-6 in Strauss.
Homework: There will be a set of homework assignments to be handed in and graded. Some of these (later in the semester) will involve MATLAB. There will also be some informal homework assignments which will not be handed in, but discussed during the next class.
Grading: 50% midterms, 20% assignments,30% final exam.
