My involvement with the graduate program and what I learned

I include below several glimpses of the progress of African Americans toward doctorates in the mathematics Department. I described my involvement with the program and the students in a Cox-Talbot talk "The Maryland Experience". I had given a shorter version in a Browne lecture at the University of Michigan and at a workshop for department chairs arranged by the MAA. The text of my talk is included here ; slides are jpg's.

Obstacles to the recruitment of minorities

At the AMS meeting at which I gave the above Cox-Talbot talk, I also appeared on a MER panel Increasing the diversity of Students in Mathematics . The text of my talk highlighting some issues that I believe adversely affect the recruitment of minorities into mathematics appeared in the Summer 2003 issue of the MER Newsletter. The text of that article is included here.
